New Families
Thinking about Cub Scouts? Here is everything you need for your first visit and your first month.
Your First Meeting
Visiting is free and there is nothing to sign up for first. Just come.
When and Where
The best first visit is a pack meeting: the 1st Thursday of the month, 6:30–7:30 PM, when all dens meet together. Den meetings are on the 3rd Thursday at the same time.
We meet in the auditorium at Covington-Harper Elementary School, 2500 River Heritage Blvd, Dumfries VA 22026. Open in Google Maps.
What Happens
A meeting runs about an hour. It usually opens with a quick activity, then the Pledge of Allegiance and the Scout Oath. Next comes the main topic for the night, and we close with acknowledgments. Your Scout can jump right in. No experience needed.
What to Wear and Bring
Comfortable clothes your Scout can move around in. No uniform is needed to visit, and there is nothing to buy. Bring your questions; leaders stay after the meeting to answer them.
Who Comes
Your Scout and a parent or guardian. Cub Scouting is family-centered: adults stay on site during meetings, and Lions and Tigers take part with an adult partner. Boys and girls in grades K–5 are welcome.
Planning to come? Give us a heads-up at admin@pack1125.org so we can say hello, and check the calendar first in case the date or room changes.
Your First Month
Register
Create an account at my.scouting.org and complete the youth application. Fees and financial aid are on the Join page.
Get the Handbook
Each rank has its own handbook. Your Scout's den leader will tell you which one; it is sold at the Scout Shop.
Start Bobcat
Every new Cub Scout begins with Bobcat, learning the Scout Oath and Law. Your Scout will work on it with the den.
Forms and Parent Resources
Official Scouting America forms and guides. Your den leader will tell you when each one is needed.
Health and Medical Record
The Annual Health and Medical Record (AHMR) is needed for campouts and other activities. Parts A and B cover most pack events.
Youth Application
Register your Scout online at my.scouting.org. Need help with fees? Apply for NCAC financial support.
Safety and Youth Protection
Scouting America's Guide to Safe Scouting sets the safety rules for every activity. Youth Protection training is required for adult volunteers and open to every parent.
Uniform Basics
No uniform is needed to visit. Once you join, see Scouting America's Cub Scout uniform guide and the guide to patch placement. Uniforms and handbooks are sold at the Scout Shop.
