COMMUNITY STANDARDS

Code of Conduct

Effective: April 2026 · Applies to all DMV Throwers events and online spaces

VERSION 1.0

DMV Throwers is built on the idea that yo-yo and skill toys should be accessible and enjoyable for everyone. That only works if people treat each other well. This code of conduct sets out what we expect from everyone who participates in our community — at meetups, at VSYC-26, and in our online spaces.

Who This Applies To

This code of conduct applies to everyone in the DMV Throwers community, including:

  • Attendees at club meetups and events
  • Competitors and spectators at VSYC-26 and any other DMV Throwers–organized contests
  • Club officers and volunteers
  • Anyone interacting in our online spaces (Instagram, Facebook, and any future DMV Throwers platforms)

The Short Version

Be kind. Be welcoming. Don't make people feel unsafe or unwelcome. If you see something, say something. The long version is below.

Expected Behavior

Everyone participating in DMV Throwers events and spaces is expected to:

Be respectful. Treat all participants with dignity regardless of age, skill level, race, ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation, disability, religion, national origin, or any other characteristic.

Be welcoming. Actively help make the space feel inclusive. This is especially important toward beginners, first-timers, and younger participants. Everyone was new once.

Be constructive. If you give feedback on someone's trick or technique, make it encouraging. Unsolicited harsh criticism is not welcome.

Mind the space. Keep the venue clean, be aware of your equipment's reach, and watch out for kids and others sharing the space with you.

Respect decisions. Club officers and event staff make judgment calls. Disagreements should be raised respectfully and privately — not argued publicly in the moment.

Unacceptable Behavior

The following behaviors will not be tolerated in any DMV Throwers space:

  • Harassment of any kind — including unwanted physical contact, following, photographing someone without consent, or persistent unwanted attention
  • Discrimination based on any personal characteristic listed above, including jokes or comments that demean people
  • Intimidation or threats, whether in person or online
  • Disruptive behavior that interferes with other participants' experience — including deliberate baiting, shouting, or equipment misuse near others
  • Inappropriate content — explicit language or imagery, especially given that minors regularly attend our events
  • Retaliation against anyone who reports a conduct concern in good faith

Children and Youth

DMV Throwers events regularly include children and teens. All adults in our community share a responsibility for maintaining an environment that is safe and welcoming for young participants.

Adults should not engage in one-on-one interactions with minors that their parent or guardian is not aware of. If you are working with a young player on a trick, keep it visible and inclusive — not isolated.

Inappropriate language, content, or behavior around minors is grounds for immediate removal from the event.

Online Spaces

The same standards apply in our Instagram comments, Facebook group, and any future DMV Throwers online platforms. Additionally:

  • Do not post content that demeans, mocks, or singles out community members
  • Do not share photos or videos of other attendees without their consent
  • Do not use DMV Throwers platforms to promote unrelated commercial activity without officer approval

How to Report a Problem

If you experience or witness behavior that violates this code of conduct:

  • At an event: Find any club officer or event staff member and let them know. You can also step away from the situation and contact us afterward.
  • Online or after the fact: Email contact@dmvthrowers.club with a description of what happened. You may report anonymously — just don't include identifying information about yourself in the message.

All reports will be handled confidentially. We will never share the identity of a reporter without explicit consent.

Consequences

Violations of this code of conduct may result in any of the following, at the discretion of club officers:

  • A private conversation and request to change the behavior
  • A formal warning
  • Removal from the current event
  • A temporary or permanent ban from DMV Throwers events and online spaces

For VSYC-26, violations may additionally result in disqualification from competition. The contest director's decision is final.

Officers will attempt to handle all situations with proportionality and fairness. The goal is always to resolve the issue and preserve a welcoming space — not to punish for its own sake.

Officer Accountability

Club officers are held to the same standard as everyone else — and in some ways a higher one. Officers who violate this code of conduct may be removed from their role. Conduct concerns involving an officer should be directed to another officer or, if that is not possible, to the club founder at contact@dmvthrowers.club.

VSYC-26 Competitor Terms

VSYC-26 competitors and volunteers are subject to both this code of conduct and the VSYC-26 Terms & Policies, which include additional contest-specific expectations.

Changes to This Policy

This code of conduct may be updated as the club grows and our community standards evolve. The version number and effective date at the top of this page reflect the most recent revision. We will announce significant changes in our community spaces.
