Virginia's Yo-Yo Contest
Comes to Northern VA

The Virginia State Yo-Yo Contest has been a Virginia tradition since 2006, when the first contest was held on January 21. See where it fits in the story of the yo-yo. This year we're bringing it to Northern Virginia for the first time: Center Court at Dulles Town Center, Saturday crowds, and a community that genuinely loves what they do.

Emceed by Brian Melford, keeping the day on schedule from kickoff to closing ceremony.

Entirely volunteer-run. Every dollar goes straight to the event. Buttons, shirts, and other merch are for sale on the day. see what’s available. Proceeds go toward running future Mid-Atlantic yo-yo contests. Organized by DMV Throwers Yo-Yo & Skill Toy Club.

KEEP IT
  • The venue: an open, public mall with free parking
  • The emcee and the crowd energy
  • Vendor tables and the Goodles booth
  • One full freestyle for every competitor
FIX IT
  • Stay on schedule, with a set lunch break and a running order you can find on the day
  • Sound: music was hard to hear. Sport / Beginner / Junior routines were set at 90 seconds, but some music was cut off at 60. That was our mistake on the day, not the rule
  • Hand out Sport / Beginner / Junior awards sooner instead of at the end of the day
  • Prizes: medals or trophies over gift baskets
  • Signs to the contest area and restrooms

You also asked for Over 40, Duo, and Artistic Performance divisions, a trick-learning station, and more vendors. Future contests will line up more closely with NYYL rules, which already describe an Over 40 division. Haven’t weighed in yet? Take the survey.
