Yo-Yos in the Classroom
Free Lesson Ideas · Printables · Coding Projects
A yo-yo is a physics lab, a math manipulative, a PE unit, a history lesson, and an art project, all for the price of a toy. Everything below is free for classroom and homeschool use.
Ideas by Subject
Pick a subject, grab an idea, and run with it. Each card lists what to teach, the grade band it fits, and where to find more.
Science & Physics
- Potential vs. kinetic energy: hold the yo-yo up (potential), throw it (kinetic), watch it sleep. The classic demo — needs five minutes and one yo-yo.
- Newton's laws: why does the yo-yo keep spinning? Why does a tug bring it back? Friction, inertia, and angular momentum in your hand.
- Experiment: time ten sleepers, change the string length, graph the results. Does a longer string sleep longer?

Math
- Statistics: attempt a trick 20 times, tally successes, compute the success rate. Real data, real motivation. Try our tally sheet →
- Word problems: string length, trick counts, buying yo-yos — arithmetic with a toy attached. Print the set →
- Geometry & algebra: the Eiffel Tower trick teaches vertical angles; the "Yo-Yo Problem" teaches linear equations (see Lesson Planet).
PE & Growth Mindset
- Hand-eye coordination: throwing and catching builds fine motor skills, bilateral coordination, and focus.
- Growth mindset, built in: nobody lands a trick on the first try. "Never give up, encourage others, do your best" — the NED Show's whole character-education program is built on yo-yos.
- Track progress: our trick diary printable → turns practice into a habit.
History & Culture
- 2,500 years of history: from ancient Greece to the Philippines to Pedro Flores's 1928 factory — the yo-yo is a case study in immigration, invention, and marketing.
- Filipino American history: Flores invented the looped string that makes every modern trick possible. Our Filipino yo-yo history page →
- Primary sources: vintage ads, patents, and contest posters make great document-analysis exercises.
Art & Design
- Coloring pages: classic and butterfly yo-yo line art, free to print. See below ↓
- Design your own: real yo-yo companies start with sketches. Our design sheet walks kids through naming and decorating their signature yo-yo.
- Extension: 3D-print a yo-yo at the library — see our science page → for where to print in DC/NoVA.
Coding Projects
- Real open-source templates: students can fork and customize actual club websites — a yo-yo club site, a scout troop site, a contest page. See the projects ↓
- Skills: HTML, CSS, GitHub Pages deployment — a finished, shareable website in one class period.
Printable Classroom Resources
Free to print and copy for classroom and homeschool use. Black-and-white friendly — each page has a print button, and math sheets include teacher answer keys. 41 printables across every grade band.

Student Coding Projects
Our club builds real open-source website templates. Students can fork one, change the colors and text, and publish a real website with GitHub Pages — no backend, no cost. Each is a complete, working site, not a toy example.
Scout Troop Website
A complete template for a scout troop or kids' club site — pages for about, events, and joining. Used for real Pack 1125 and Girl Scout Troop 80301 sites.
Yo-Yo Club Website
A starter site for a yo-yo or skill-toy club: meetup info, trick guides, photo gallery. Customize it into a club of your own.
Contest Event Site
A template for running a contest: schedule, divisions, sponsors, results pages. Based on our real Virginia State Yo-Yo Contest site.
Player Map
An interactive map template — plot players, clubs, or shops with privacy-friendly jittered pins. Based on our live yo-yo player map.
Event Registration App
A registration-app template with sign-ups and admin views — the same pattern behind our contest registration system. For students ready for JavaScript frameworks.
